Best Horror Television Show

2024 Nominee

The massive success of The Walking Dead paved the way for the creation of its first spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead, which premiered on AMC in 2015. Set in the same apocalyptic universe, the show offered fans a fresh perspective on the outbreak of the zombie virus, this time from the point of view of characters living in Los Angeles and set chronologically at the beginning of the zombie pandemic. The series expanded the world of the original series while building its own dedicated following due to the new, diverse characters and locations. The show quickly became a ratings hit, debuting to 10.13 million viewers—the highest-rated series premiere in cable television history at the time and double the viewership of The Walking Dead’s premiere episode. Its success reinforced the cultural impact of the Walking Dead franchise, proving that the hunger for survival-themed narratives was far from over. One of the challenges of Fear The Walking Dead was creating a show that aligned with the branding of the larger narrative universe, while ensuring that the show stood on its own and provided fans a fresh take on the genre. One way that the show did that was by differentiating itself in its look and featured a more richly saturated color grading as opposed to the more muted tones seen on the flagship Walking Dead series. The series was also shot on digital cameras instead of 16mm film cameras that the main series filmed on. In post production, we kept the same cadence and style of editing that prestige cinematic television shows like The Walking Dead had become known for - longer shots and more deliberate edits to allow the audience to really connect with the drama unfolding for the characters on screen.
